Categories: Feature Film

"Bijeli đavo" is a 1959 Italian-Yugoslav historical adventure epic directed by cult Italian director Riccardo Freda. A co-production of Montenegro's Lovćen Film and Italy's Majestic, it is based on Tolstoy's novella "Hadji Murat". Shooting locations for the film included the coastal strip from Žurkovo to Opatija, the slopes of Kamenjak and Platak, the Rijeka and Opatija halls of the Partizan Society, the Governor's Palace, and Hotel Kvarner. The latter two doubled as St. Petersburg's Winter Palace and General Vorontsov's palace. A Caucasian village was constructed at Preluk. During filming in Opatija's St. James Park, thousands of tulips and the country's only specimen of the Furcraea gigantea plant were destroyed.
