Categories: Feature Film

Smrt djevojčice sa žigicama is a crime drama about the murder investigation of a local prostitute, a Romanian transsexual named Marillena, set on the island of Rab in the late summer of the wartime year 1992, told from the perspective of the narrator Fero, the author's alter ego. After many years, Fero returns to the 'malo misto' (small town) where he spent his childhood and youth to attend the funeral of his friend Globus's six-year-old daughter, who died of leukemia. On the island, Fero encounters old friends and acquaintances, nostalgically visiting locations where he had formative experiences. However, being a pathologist by profession, he gets drawn into the investigation of the brutal murder of the prostitute, also known as the little match girl.

Smrt djevojčice sa žigicama (The Death of the Little Match Girl) by Goran Kulenović is based on the hit novel of the same name by Zoran Ferić, an award-winning Croatian writer whose specific bizarre, grotesque, morbid, and dark-humored style has readily attracted domestic readers for two decades.
