Categories: Feature Film

The 1966 film "Sedmi kontinent" is a cult feature film for children and adults directed by Dušan Vukotić, the only Croatian and Yugoslav Academy Award winner (for the animated short "Surogat", 1961). The screenplay, based on a short story by Ružena Fišerove was co-written by Dušan Vukotić and Andro Lušičić. This film represents an extremely important achievement in cinema history, having been produced as a major international co-production between Zagreb's Jadran Film and the Czechoslovak studio Koliba (Bratislava). Part of the film was shot on location in Rijeka, featuring around 50 local extras. The story follows a group of children who discover a new continent completely devoid of adults. Soon, thousands of children of all races begin leaving their parents behind to journey to this new continent, building a friendly and joyful society where everyone is equal. Their parents eventually realize that children are vanishing worldwide and launch a global search, entirely unaware that the seventh continent even exists. The film achieved immense success with both audiences and critics, performing exceptionally well domestically and on the international festival circuit. It won the prestigious Golden Arena for Best Director and the Golden Arena for Best Production Design at the 1966 Pula Film Festival. Today, it is regarded as one of the most original children's films in European cinema history due to its timeless anti-war and humanitarian message
