In the winter of 1573, a peasant revolt broke out in the Stubica region under the leadership of Matija Gubec and Ilija Gregorić, directed against the tyrannical rule of the landowner Franjo Tahi. The insurgents joined forces with Slovenian serfs, and the revolt soon gained tremendous momentum, evolving into an anti-feudal movement. Young Petrek—who had grown close to Regica, a girl from a traveling theater troupe—was both a participant in and a witness to these events...
